What to see at Castello Ursino
Castello Ursino is a 13th-century fortress whose position and appearance changed with Catania’s coastline. Built in 1239 on the coast as a defensive stronghold commissioned by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, it now stands away from its original coastal setting.
The castle has a square plan measuring 50 by 50 metres, arranged around an inner courtyard. Look for the south-side portal leading to Salone San Giorgio, where inscriptions and graffiti made by prisoners are visible.
During the Sicilian Vespers, the fortress served as the seat of Parliament; later, it became a residence for Aragonese rulers of Sicily, including Frederick III.
The 1669 lava flow covered the castle’s bastions and altered the coastline. That change helps explain why a fortress originally built on the coast is no longer in its original position.

The Civic Museum inside the castle
The Museo Civico Castello Ursino brings together archaeological material and art collections inside the historic fortress. The state granted the castle to the Municipality of Catania in 1930 for use as a Civic Museum, which opened to the public in 1934.
Archaeology is on the ground floor, the picture gallery on the first floor and open space on the second. The collections include the Biscari and Benedictine collections. A visit covers the courtyard, ground floor, first floor and part of the collection.
